Image converter

PNG to AVIF

Convert supported still PNG images to AVIF locally. The route keeps supported alpha and dimensions, blocks APNG, 16-bit and HDR paths instead of silently reducing them, and does not upload source images.

Processing runs in your browser. Local files are not uploaded to a ResizeNest processing server. With URL import, your browser connects directly to the source website; ResizeNest does not relay the file. Direct URL import works only when the source website allows cross-origin reading.

Private by design

image processing stays in your browser. ResizeNest does not need your original image uploaded to an application server.

Real output

Results come from the actual processing pipeline, with measured dimensions, bytes and format instead of placeholder estimates.

Simple workflow

Process one image or a local batch, then download current successful results.

Three simple steps

How to use png to avif

  1. 01

Choose, drop or paste PNG images; ResizeNest checks signature, frame state, bit depth and transparency.

  2. 02

Choose AVIF quality and optional resize. Speed remains fixed and lossless is not exposed because the shared recipe does not apply those controls.

  3. 03

Convert, inspect hard edges and alpha at 100% when needed, then download the current AVIF or a ZIP of current successful results.

Useful details

Built for a clear, predictable result

Understand what the tool does before you download the result.

01

Real PNG to AVIF conversion

The shared worker decodes PNG, preserves supported RGBA pixels, optionally resizes, encodes lossy AVIF and verifies the AVIF ftyp signature before export.

02

Transparency is preserved

Supported 8-bit still PNG alpha, including partial transparency, is passed to the AVIF encoder rather than flattened onto a background.

03

PNG input does not make AVIF lossless

AVIF quality 50 is the default and output is lossy. Quality 100 is not labeled lossless, and the current S06 contract has no AVIF lossless toggle.

04

No fake speed control

The worker uses a fixed balanced AVIF speed. Speed is not in the shared recipe schema, so this page does not show a selector that would not affect processing.

05

16-bit PNG and APNG are blocked

The current AVIF baseline is 8-bit SDR. 16-bit PNG, HDR, APNG and indeterminate-frame input are rejected with explicit messages rather than silently losing precision or animation.

06

Compare hard edges at 100%

Text, logos and alpha gradients can expose lossy artifacts. After conversion, inspect the 100% result before deciding whether to keep the selected quality or rerun from the original.

07

Same-route local workflow

Quality, resize, process, retry, result review, single download and current-success ZIP export stay on /png-to-avif and retries reread immutable original bytes.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

Does AVIF keep PNG transparency?

Yes for supported still 8-bit PNG input. Alpha is carried into the AVIF encode and checked again by the real codec acceptance path.

Is PNG to AVIF lossless?

No on this route. The shared AVIF contract is lossy and defaults to quality 50; ResizeNest does not fake lossless with quality 100.

Why compare edges before downloading?

Text, logos and alpha gradients can reveal ringing or banding more clearly than a scaled preview. The 100% comparison helps you choose quality.

What happens to a 16-bit PNG?

It is blocked with an explicit 8-bit-baseline message instead of silently discarding precision.

Does conversion leave /png-to-avif?

No. Options, processing, retry, results and downloads remain on /png-to-avif.
